Quali obiettivi ti poni, Teniel?

Teniel Campbell talks about her first months in Valcar – Travel & Service: “I feel good here, I dream about entering the Top 10 at the world time trial championship”

It’s almost time for the debut of Valcar – Travel & Service at Strade Bianche on Saturday 1st August and most likely at the start of the first Italian World Tour race there will be also Teniel Campbell, Caribbean athlete from Trinidad & Tobago in her first year in Italy with the pink jersey of Bergamo’s team.
“The Strade Bianche and the cobblestone races are opportunities to learn” says Teniel, “I’m still not very comfortable on this kind of road, but I’m here to improve.”

Teniel, your story has fascinated the media around the world. From Trinidad & Tobago to the UCI Center in Aigle in Switzerland with the dream of becoming a professional rider. Why did you choose Valcar – Travel & Service as your team?

“It’s fun, I had never considered the idea of ??racing with Valcar – Travel & Service. However, one day, my friend Miriam Vece in Switzerland told me that this team was suitable for me. So I’ve sent an email to Davide Arzeni. He was really interested, he called Miriam every day and we met on the track in Aigle. Miriam helped with the translation and Davide was explaining to me that I would suit well in the team “.

What made you decide to choose this team?

“In Valcar – Travel & Service the person is placed before the athlete. This convinced me to choose. I am young and I need to grow as a person in order to achieve my goal of being one of the strongest athletes in the world. When I saw the progress of young girls like Elisa Balsamo, Marta Cavalli and Chiara Consonni, I said to myself that this would be the right team for me. It wasn’t about the money. Other teams wanted me but I needed to be in a place where I feel comfortable . I made the right choice. Davide surprised me about how quickly he understood me as a person. Even if I don’t speak, he immediately knows if something is wrong”.

So, an excellent relationship. What about your teammates?

“In the last weeks I observed my teammates: they all have a strong personality, they are very different from each other and they are all ‘hungry’. I like this. They have a lot of energy and push a lot and give everything even during training. In the race they are working as a team. I like this very much too”.

Do you have examples of this?

“Yes, for example Silvia Persico surprised me. She is so small, but she is very strong. She gives everything and works a lot. Silvia Pollicini is also like her: they give everything for whoever is the leader. Ilaria Sanguineti always encourages me. Before the sprint in Omloop van het Hageland she said ‘T.C., believe in yourself, you can do it’. Ilaria is crazy. Once we were around the thirtieth position in the group and she said ‘Teniel, follow me’. And I said ‘Ok’. I followed her and – I don’t know how she did it – but in a few seconds she took me at the front of the group. We are a really strong team, I like this a lot ”.

How were your races?

“In the races after the lockdown I made myself available for the team. I don’t feel very good so I asked Davide to not give me leadership roles. Even if I love to win and I’m competitive, it wouldn’t have been fair to bet on me. Before the lockdown in Spain I finished third, but I wasn’t happy. I could have won if I hadn’t been closed to the barriers. But it doesn’t matter, it’s fine, it’s part of the game. In Belgium, however, I started to cry after the race. I was sprinting, Marta Bastianelli and Lorena Wiebes were around me and just when I was opening the gas I had a moment of self doubt and then got blocked by the Fdj riders. I finished fifth, but I was disappointed. “

What are your goals, Teniel?

“I would like to do well in China and Thailand at the end of the season, but my biggest dream is to enter the Top 10 at the World Time Trial Championships in Switzerland because that’s where my cycling story started. I know it’s not easy, but it’s worth to try. There is no need to set limits: sometimes the legs are stronger than you think. Davide Arzeni and President Valentino Villa think I can do more than Top 10. Valentino even told me that if I get on the podium at the World Championships, he will start studying English. Even if we don’t understand each other a lot because he speaks Italian and I speak English, it is clear that he is a good person. I feel good here, I am happy to have everything: an excellent time trial bike, equipment and a good nutrition program. I am very focused on this goal, I want to do well.
