Dopo i rinnovi contrattuali di Chiara Consonni e di Eleonora Gasparrini per la prossima stagione, la Valcar – Travel & Service annuncia l’arrivo di una nuova atleta. Si tratta della ventiquattrenne australiana Lizzie Stannard, atleta nata a Sydney e cresciuta in Nuova Zelanda che si è già trasferita in Italia da pochi giorni in attesa di poter conoscere le nuove compagne di squadra. Lizzie è un’atleta completa che ha saputo ottenere risultati interessanti: 5/a ai Campionati Nazionali australiani nel 2021, 8/a al GC Tour Down Under 2021, 3/a miglior giovane al Women’s Jayco Herald Sun Tour 2019 e 4/a ai Campionati d’Oceania U23 nel 2018.
Sorella maggiore del promettente corridore australiano Robert Stannard, Lizzie proverà a giocarsi le proprie carte in Europa per fare un ulteriore salto di qualità.
“Negli ultimi 18 mesi abbiamo potuto correre poco in Australia per via delle restrizioni, ora spero che questo possa cambiare qui in Europa” racconta la ventiquattrenne australiana laureata in Scienze Politiche.
Lizzie, quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per il tuo futuro?
“Voglio imparare ad essere la miglior atleta, la miglior compagna di squadra e la miglior persona possibile, e poi essere competitiva con le migliori atlete professioniste. Nel prossimo futuro mi piacerebbe rappresentare l’Australia ai Mondiali e ai Giochi Olimpici.”
Perché hai scelto di correre per la Valcar – Travel & Service?
“La Valcar – Travel & Service è una squadra con una fantastica reputazione per come sa sviluppare i giovani talenti, ed è un team da tenere d’occhio. Ci sono molte opportunità qui, e questo è importante per poter crescere come atleta. Sono molto entusiasta di far parte di questo progetto per il resto di quest’anno e per il 2022.”
Come è nata la tua passione per il ciclismo?
“I miei genitori sono ciclisti accaniti ed entrambi correvano ad alto livello prima che arrivassimo io e i miei fratelli. Penso di aver sempre stata in sella ad una bicicletta, anche se quando ero più giovane ho passato molto tempo a praticare anche molti altri sport.”
Tuo fratello Robert è un apprezzato corridore professionista. Che rapporto hai con lui?
“Penso che sia abbastanza buono! Non lo vedo da un po’ perché è stato molto difficile viaggiare a causa della pandemia, ma parliamo al telefono più o meno spesso, a seconda di quanto siamo impegnati entrambi. Non passiamo molto tempo a parlare di ciclismo – normalmente gli parlo di politica in Australia e lui mi dice la sua opinione su questo… Entrambi abbiamo un altro fratello minore in Nuova Zelanda e andiamo tutti molto d’accordo, anche se non ci vediamo quasi mai.”
Un’ultima domanda, Lizzie. Cosa ti piace fare nel tempo libero?
“Bella domanda. Ultimamente mi sembra di non aver avuto molto tempo libero… mi piace leggere articoli di attualità e per tenermi aggiornata su quanto accade nel mondo (ho appena finito una laurea in Scienze Politiche e mi sento un po’ ignorante senza studiare). In questi giorni passo molto tempo al telefono parlando con i miei amici e, quando posso, mi piace incontrarli di persona. Al momento mi piace trascorrere il tempo su Duolingo ed essere sempre alla ricerca dei migliori ‘coffee shop’ in cui stare”.

Australian Lizzie Stannard will wear the Valcar – Travel & Service jersey
After the contractual renewals of Chiara Consonni and Eleonora Gasparrini for the next season, Valcar – Travel & Service announces the arrival of a new athlete. We are talking about the 24-year-old Australian Lizzie Stannard, an athlete born in Sydney and raised in New Zealand who has already moved to Italy a few days ago waiting to meet her new teammates. Lizzie is a complete athlete who has been able to obtain interesting results: 5th Elite Australian National Road Championships 2021, 8th GC Tour Down Under 2021, 3rd Young Rider GC Women’s Jayco Herald Sun Tour 2019 and 4th U23 Women Oceania Road Cycling Championships 2018.
Older sister of the promising Australian rider Robert Stannard, Lizzie will try to play her cards in Europe to make a further leap in quality.
“Unfortunately the last eighteen months in Australia has been fraught with lockdown restrictions, and we have had very little opportunity to race. I hope this will change now I am here in Europe with Valcar-Travel & Service” tells the 24-year-old Australian with a degree in Political Science.
Lizzie, what are your goals for the future?
“I want to learn how to be the best athlete, team-mate and person I can be, and to be competitive with the very best riders in the professional peloton. I would love to represent Australia at the World Championships and Olympic Games on the road in the near future!”
Why did you choose Valcar Travel & Service?
“Valcar Travel & Service is a team with a fantastic reputation for developing talent, and is a team on which to keep a close eye. There is so much opportunity here, and this is important to be able to grow as an athlete. I am very excited to be a part of this project for the remainder of this year and for 2022!”
How did you start cycling?
“My parents are avid cyclists and both used to race at a high level before my brothers and I came along. I think I have always ridden a bike, though when I was younger I spent a lot of time playing many other sports as well.”
Your brother Robert is an acclaimed professional runner. What relationship do you have with him?
“I think it’s pretty good! I haven’t seen him for a while as it has been very difficult to travel due to the pandemic, but we talk on the phone more or less often, depending on how busy we both are. We don’t spend a lot of time talking about cycling – normally I tell him about politics in Australia and he tells me his opinion on this…. We both have another younger brother in New Zealand and we all get on really well, though we hardly ever see each other.”
What do you like to do in your free time?
“Good question. Lately I feel like I have not had much free time … I like to read bits and pieces about current affairs and the state of the world to keep relevant (I just finished a degree in Politics and I feel a bit ignorant without study). I also seem to spend a lot of time on the phone these days talking to my friends – when I can I also like to see them in person! At the moment I have also been on Duolingo a lot, and I always, always love to find the best coffee shops where I am staying.”
